The Starr Foundation is
putting up $5 million to fund a new study on pediatric diabetes prevention. The study will be carried out over the
course of two years and will examine the question of whether or not fitness activities and healthy eating education can
prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes in children and teens. The "guinea pigs" for the study will be one
thousand New York middle school students. Their progress will be compared against a control group of other students.
Efforts will be made to mold the focus of activities and lessons to compliment the interests of today's kids and teens
-- by presenting hip hop dancing classes as an exercise option, for instance. A pilot project for the study has already
been completed. Soaring rates of Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents are the reason for the study. Here's a
scary statistic: Type 2 diabetes has increased ten-fold in teenagers over the past decade!Note: The contents of this blog are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as medical advice or substitute for professional care. For medical emergencies, dial 911!
