dLifeTV exposes the Cost of Diabetes

Many of us know that failure to properly manage diabetes can lead to financially stifling and disabling complications, heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness and amputations to name a few. Between medications, supplies, durable goods (for those of you pumping), doctor's visits and training - diabetes can really decay your annual income. And yes, I'm talking about the copays. When an individual lacks health insurance altogether or has inadequate coverage, the costs are even greater.

As diabetes continues to rise -- it is increasing by 8 percent each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- state health coverage protections are becoming more important than ever.

dLife says new air travel rules endangering diabetic travelers

Well, this is not entirely unexpected: according to the company dLife, which produces the cable show on diabetes also called dLife, air travelers are being harassed by airport security guards. According to a press release from dLife, airport security in some locations have even demanded that diabetic travelers remove their insulin pumps and pack them in their checked luggage. Says Nicole Johnson Baker, dLife host and wearer of an insulin pump, airport security staff must understand that such actions could be life-threateningly dangerous for diabetics. Also, storing insulin in checked bagged could damage the drug because it could result in exposure to extreme temperatures.

dLife has announced a new initiative to request a medical task force be established that would review the new transportation security rules, including the ban on including liquids in carry-on bags. dLife has written to Congressman Peter King, Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, explaining why it thinks the new rules need urgent revision.

Note: although dLife claims that diabetic air passengers have experienced problems with airport security workers, its press release on the subject does not contain specific examples of such incidents.
