Life insurance industry plays catch-up

Local news channel ABC7 in San Francisco reports that advances in medical technology mean some people are now eligible for life insurance or can afford life insurance. Some of these people would previously have been disqualified due to having certain serious health conditions or else they would not have been able to afford the high premiums charged to such people. That includes people with diabetes.

The report says it's a case of the insurance industry playing catch-up, with more insurers gradually offering coverage to previously ineligible people. The story profiles Joyce Harney, a diabetic for twenty-two years. Harney says she looked for life insurance but because of her diabetes was either turned down or quoted unaffordably high premiums. She says that's terribly unfair given that she takes good care of her health. "I do what I need to do, I have a bag of food. I carry my insulin. I carry my tester. To know that I could have life insurance would give me great peace of mind."

I wonder how widespread this trend is and how many diabetics are finding it easier to get life insurance?
