Indian diabetes study enlists the help of thousands of villagers

Thousands of villagers from an Indian town in the state of Tamil Nadu are to participate in a major diabetes study. The project, initiated by DyAnsys India, a medical technology company, will involve over sixty doctors and as many as 2,300 locals. The purpose is to study detection of diabetic autonomic neuropathy using heart rate tests. The heart rate tests will be conducted using, naturally, a device owned by DyAnsys India - the ANSiscope.

The ANSiscope is a small, battery-operated gadget which monitors the nervous system using ECG (electrocardiogram) readings. The idea, to be tested in the study, is that the ANSiscope could be used by doctors to detect autonomic neuropathy in diabetic patients as early as possible, especially in remote areas.
