She is Amy Tenderich and her site, Diabetes Mine, is a force to be reckoned with in the diabetes online community. What do I mean? When Amy speaks - anybody who's anybody in the diabetes online community listens.

A few months ago she posted an open letter to Steve Jobs, which was wildly discussed in the blogosphere and media. She invited gadget designers to rise to the challenge of creating sleeker, cooler, consumer-oriented medical devices for people with diabetes. Not only did she get the diabetes blogosphere stirring - but the minds of entrepreneurs storming, as well.

Amy motivated a San Francisco-based company to react in a universal remote control sort of way. Adaptive Path has designed The Charmr, a prototype of a continuous glucose monitor combined with an insulin pump, universally controlled by a device that looks to be no bigger than a USB stick! I strongly encourage everybody to checkout Amy's blog with all the details (including reader feedback) and the YouTube video on the Charmr. Bravo Amy!!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Your Story at "Six Until Me"

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Lifestyle, Blogs, Bloggers

Blogs are everywhere these days. Hell, there seem to be about a hundred that run along the right side of this page; with topics ranging from Cinema to Wireless Technology. Oh yeah, and don't forget about us here at the Life Science blogs, covering news and info dealing with cancer, cardiovascular health, and diabetes. But, these are OUR stories. Well, maybe not directly -- but we are the people that are passing along the information here on these blogs. What about YOUR story? Well, now there's a chance for you to talk about your experience with diabetes, and the forum to do so is based off of a very well known and respected diabetes blog called Six Until Me (www.sixuntilme.com).

Separate from the main page blog, the new Your Story page allows readers to email their contributions and have them published on the site, thereby fostering an even greater sense of community and support among readers. And "stories" appears to be a pretty loose term, as it is made clear on the site that you can contribute anything diabetes related that you feel the world would benefit from knowing. Pictures, videos, poems, antecdotes, and of course, actual stories can be emailed to: story@sixuntilme.com

I encourage you to vist Six Until Me and spend some time navagating the site. Unlike much of what I write on TheDiabetesBlog, the content on Six Until Me is less diabetes medical/research-based and more centered on daily living with diabetes. The highs, the lows (both figuratively and literally), the good, the bad, and even the ugly -- it's all covered by the site's author with humor and elequence. Now, with the addition of the Your Story section of Six Until Me, your own stories, musings, rants, and tales of personal triumph can also be told.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Meet the Bloggers: Diane Rixon

We thought it might be nice if you knew more about the phenomenally talented bloggers who blog quality health-related content here at the Life Sciences blogs.

All of our bloggers are passionate about the health topics they write about related to cancer, diabetes and cardio heart health; compassionate in intent; and dedicated to bringing news, information, resources and a personal perspective meant to educate, enlighten and inspire in prevention, health management and survivorship.

Without further ado, we would like to introduce you to Diane Rixon, who blogs the Diabetes Blog.

When did you become a Life Sciences blogger? February 2006

How did you become interested in writing about health?

My friend and fellow-blogger Jen Creer raved about blogging as a cool gig and a great learning opportunity. I have done a lot of freelance writing in the past and thought "why not?"

When it comes to health, what is your best advice to maintaining good health?

Stay active. I know, that's very run-of-the-mill advice, huh? Well, sorry, but this is what works for me. If you stay active, you maintain your overall health - both physical and mental. However, I don't mean running a marathon. I am not a sporty gal and have only set foot inside a gym a half-dozen times at most, I swear! What I have learned is to be myself and do what I know I'll enjoy. For me, that's as simple as long walks with my dogs, stretching, a little yoga, staying relaxed.

Name three favorite quotes:

"Lord, what fools these mortals be!" -- William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream

"Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards." -- Benjamin Franklin. This applies to many contexts, not just marriage!

"Make adoption your first option." -- I don't know who came up with this one, but it's the mantra of animal rescue folks.

Name three health-related books you would recommend:

Okay, I'm pregnant, which explains my first choice: A Child is Born by Lennart Nilsson and Lars Hamburger. This classic explains the process of how a baby is created, from egg to birth. It's famous, however, for its incredible photos of life in the womb. I can't emphasize this enough: the photos really are incredible. You must see them! You must! This book is not just for those expecting a baby. Promise.

I hereby nominate Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser as my second choice. This guy has done an amazing job of revealing what junk many (dare I say most?) Americans consume on a daily basis. Everything from the appalling state of the country's public school lunches to the fast food restaurant meals that are the dirty little food secret of millions. This book covers it all, pretty much, from the poor nutritional value of the foods themselves, the frequently disturbing conditions under which they are produced, and the negative impact the mega-industrial food industry has on society at large -- from national health to the economy. You may not agree with everything he says, but it's an awesome read.

Third has to be Listening to Prozac by Peter D. Kramer. Wow, reading this book for the first-time was such an eye-opener. It's incredible what scientists have learned about the brain over the past few decades, and so enlightening to discover the role of brain chemistry in explaining human behavior. What makes it even more tantalizing is that we still have so much yet to discover about the brain. Love this book! Also love Dr. Kramer, who now hosts the fantastic NPR show The Infinite Mind, which I can't recommend highly enough.

Who inspires you?

My husband. He's so darn positive. "Relentlessly upbeat" is how I describe him. I can't deny it - it's infectious.

What inspires you?

Being outdoors. The beauty of nature. Trees and wide open spaces. The ocean.

When you are not writing for the Life Science blogs, what do you do?

I'm currently preparing for the arrival of my very first baby! A girl, due in October. So, being a mother will taking up much of my time between now and...who knows?!

Also, I'm one of those big-soft-hearted animal lover-types. I'm involved in animal rescue in my community. The group I'm affiliated with is Tallahassee Big Dog Rescue. Check out our website! My revolving crew of foster pets keeps me busy between giving them everyday care and love, cleaning up the mess they make (uh, lots of shedding!), taking phone calls, shuttling animals to and from the vet for medical stuff, updating their web entries, and attending adoption booths. We don't just adopt out pets. We also try to educate people about the pet overpopulation crisis.

It's estimated that around three or four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year in this country, simply because of unchecked breeding. Please spay and neuter your pets. Please don't buy pets from pet stores or backyard breeders - make adoption your first option!

Whenever I'm not running around or online, I'm reading.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Meet the Bloggers: Chris Sparling

We thought it might be nice if you knew more about the phenomenally talented bloggers who blog quality health-related content here at the Life Sciences blogs.

All of our bloggers are passionate about the health topics they write about related to cancer, diabetes and cardio heart health; compassionate in intent; and dedicated to bringing news, information, resources and a personal perspective meant to educate, enlighten and inspire in prevention, health management and survivorship.

Without further ado, we would like to introduce you to Chris Sparling, who blogs the Diabetes, Cardio and Cancer Blog.

When did you become a Life Sciences blogger? August 2006

How did you become interested in writing about health?

In support of my girlfriend, Kerri Morrone, who is a Type 1 diabetic and the author of Six Until Me. I felt it apropos to start my fall with a new career, altogether. I'm new to blogging but I am no stranger to sharing my opinion.

How did you become interested in writing about health?

In July, I issued a press release about my website Shop2Cures. I was thrilled when I saw that the Cancer Blog gave recognition to my website. I thanked Dalene for posting about my site, and in response to my "blog thanks" she asked if I'd consider becoming a blogger. Thrilled at the invite -- I jumped on the offer, immediately!

When it comes to health, what is your best advice to maintaining good health?

My best advice to maintaining good health is to not let stress consume you. Stress will literally break you down and tear you up, inside. As best you can -- deter and detox your life from any undue stress. There is far too much in life that will stress you out. Some things are literally unavoidable (especially health related) so when it comes to stress-find a way to keep your life as low as possible on the stress scales.

Name three favorite quotes:

Love knows not it's own depth until the hour of separation.

If You Are Not Part Of The Solution You Are Part Of The Problem.

Sun's out, guns out.

Name three health-related books you would recommend:

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars. It's a compulsive book on cutting out the carbohydrates and any foods that have a semblance of sugar in them. My former endocrinologist refers to Dr. Bernstein as a compulsive lunatic! She might be right, but his principles are laced with good intentions.

Another book I've gained greater perspective in life from is Creative Visualization, written by Shakti Gawain. The principles outlined in her book unveil the natural path to happiness. One must first discover who you are by doing what you do best, to ultimately have what you want. She points out that the mainstream way of thinking is backwards. The common misconception is that you must first have money, in order to do what you want to do, to be happy. Her philosophy is simple and remarkable.

The last book I would recommend is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Hands down, this is one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read! It is a timeless classic that is about a hopeless boy whose dreams come true. Anybody who reads the story will fall in love with the descriptive language of Roald Dalh, the Oompa Loompahs, and of course, the fantasy experience of the 5 "golden ticket" winners.

Who inspires you?

I've been inspired by many people throughout my life. The one woman I wish to mention predominantly is Dr. Denise Faustman. I believe her scientific research holds the answer to a cure for type I diabetes. Only after she begins clinical trials on humans will we know how effective her proposed cure will be for type I diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. I am inspired, every day, finally knowing that a cure is on its way.

What inspires you?

I am inspired when I am able to do something so well that others admire my work. I will continue to blaze a trail on innovative and persuasive information for diabetics. Sharing this information provides me a great source of inspiration and motivation to "keep on keepin' on."

When you are not writing for the Life Science blogs, what do you do?

In my spare time I like seeing my sisters, meeting new people, exploring new adventures in life and figuring out where I'm headed -- and with whom. I suppose to summarize, in my spare time I'm trying to manufacture a social life to speak of. I've been a bit of a hermit these past few years trying to build my corporation to gain notoriety for the sake of funding cure research. Here's where I lose most of my audience (friends and family, included). When I start talking business-people's eyes glaze over. My success is based on a dollar amount of contributions to cure research. My life has dissolved into a never-ending journey of building a business based on the immeasurable success of online shopping.

Quite simply: I created an advertising portal for the largest shopping sites. The site earns advertising commissions when visitors click through and shop my affiliates, Shop4Cures. By offering coupons, free shipping, and other incentives I hope to encourage people to use Shop4Cures for their online shopping. The greatest benefit of using Shop4Cures is the donation that is made to cure research every time you shop.

With that said, I hope to focus my blogging efforts mostly on introducing great concepts for diabetes-related inventions and concepts to the diabetes community online. I hope to keep it entertaining, as well as wonderfully informative. As previously mentioned, in defense of my atrophying social life -- hopefully I can rebound in the public eye and pick-up a few online stalkers in the process. I don't mind the attention, in fact -- I welcome it!

Permalink | Email this | Comments
