How to reduce your risk of heart disease as a diabetic

diabetesFor diabetics, it turns out it's not just managing glucose levels that's important to long-term health. Because diabetes has been shown to cause damage to the heart and blood vessels, diabetics must also pay attention to controlling risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD is the single most common complication associated with diabetes, and women are at even higher risk for complications than men. ThirdAge has a good article on risk factors to watch out for and tips on how to control them.

Diabetes Stories: oral histories of diabetes patients in the 20th century

Diabetes StoriesThis recently launched site sponsored by the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism presents audio recordings of the life stories of 50 people diagnosed with diabetes between 1927 and 1997. An Oral History of Diabetes is a project that explores the human aspect of living with diabetes, as well as providing a unique historical overview of treatments and medical developments through the decades during the twentieth century. In addition to the full-length audio interviews, the site provides shorter audio samples, written summaries, photographs and full transcripts of the interviews -- a fascinating project that will be of interest to healthcare professionals, historians, people living with diabetes, and amateur history buffs alike.

Hello, world!

Hello, readers -- I just wanted to take just a brief moment to introduce myself, as I'll be filling in for the inimitable Catherine Calacanis over the next couple of weeks. I am excited to brush a bit of the dust off my degree in biochemistry and return to my science roots after having had my head squarely in the tech world for some years now! I'm looking forward to discussion with you all. Thanks!
