Chromium Picolinate may help those with Type 2

The more you know, the more of an informed healthcare consumer you become. Learning more about your condition can help you take better care of yourself. Information is an essential tool in diabetes management. So here's a little tidbit from DiabetesNews.com that hits on one of the hottest supplements for people with diabetes: Chromium picolinate.

DiabetesNews reports the following: "Results from a new study in patients with type 2 diabetes demonstrate that daily supplementation with 1000 mcg of chromium as chromium picolinate, in combination with a common oral anti-diabetic medication, improves insulin sensitivity and glucose control better than the oral anti-diabetic agent alone."

This could be big. Anything that combats insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes could prove to be a crucial tool in their diabetes management. The article goes on to say that weight gain was less with use of supplemental chromium over a sulfonylurea. So this supplement may improve insulin sensitivity and doesn't appear to cause weight gain? Sounds almost too good to be true. However, future studies could prove this supplement to be something worth looking into for people with type 2 diabetes.

There's plenty of talk about supplements. What should I be taking? How will I benefit? Can I be doing any harm to my body by taking this? The best method is to be armed with as much information as possible, then discuss it with your medical team. Work with them to outline a supplement regimen that works best for you.
