Think it's tough being the parent of a diabetic child? Well, it is. But, like your mother (probably) used to say, there's always someone worse off than yourself. There is a feature in Canada's Edmonton Sun about the Moffatt family. Paul and Lisa Moffatt are the parents of three young children: Nicole (11), Gregory (9) and Danielle (6). All three of the family's kids have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Little Danielle was the last to be diagnosed, on the last day of the family's vacation. She had begun to show warning signs so mom and dad tested her blood sugar...and then they knew. The parents describe how upsetting it was to know that all three of their young children will now have to live with the day-to-day trials of diabetes--the needles and finger-pricks. Then there is the constant worry for the parents of ensuring all three little ones' health needs are being met daily. That's a lot of work.
So, why would all three children have Type 1? The answer is not clear. Parents Lisa and Paul are not diabetic themselves and there is no family history of diabetes. They have been told that the odds of having a second child develop diabetes is one in a thousand, making it all the more incredible that they now have a third child diagnosed.
