Beagle dials 911, saves owner having diabetic seizure

If you're tired of hearing stories about adorable little kids who dialed 911, thereby saving grandma or grandpa from diabetic shock ... well, you probably won't like this story either. It's about another cute little lifesaver, this time of the canine variety.

When Kevin Weaver of Ocoee, Florida, went into a diabetic seizure in February, his life was saved by his two-year old beagle, Belle, who -- I kid you not -- dialed 911. The dog had been specially trained (by an Atlanta nonprofit) to assist her diabetic owner. Her major skill is being able to detect blood sugar levels through taste and smell, then alert her owner by whining and pawing if the level drops below normal. As if that wasn't enough, Belle was also trained to dial 911 in such a situation by pressing the 9 key (preprogrammed to dial 911) of Weaver's cell phone with her teeth.

Thanks to Belle, paramedics arrived and Weaver was okay. In June, he and Belle will journey to Washington, DC, where Belle will be honored at the 12th Annual Wireless Foundation Achievement Awards Dinner. Belle is also the first animal to ever receive a VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, which each year honors those who used a cell phone to help others.

I love dogs and have them around me just about twenty-four hours a day, but even so they never cease to amaze me! What a great dog!
