For those of you (and me!) that like to enjoy the taste of the season in the form of alcohol the key is to stay safe. The best way to do this is to have your meter by your side. The biggest problem with drinking and having diabetes is the chance of hypoglycemia-low blood sugar. When you drink, your liver has to concentrate on getting that alcohol broken down in the
body. As a result, it can’t do the job of releasing sugar, which is how your system balances a low blood sugar. On top of that is the other problem of not recognizing the symptoms of a low. So how can you be safe? Plan ahead. Have your meter nearby. Make sure all your supplies are in your kit. That may sound silly, but if you run out of strips at a party it is doubtful you will go home to get them. Nibble while you drink. Personally, I think in this situation it is better to run a little higher than chance a low. It is also helpful to have a loved one or a buddy that can remind you to check your blood sugar. Time flies when you are having fun! The goal is too have fun with family and friends, not wind up at the end of a glucagon injection! And please remember, never drink and drive.
