I received a comment yesterday from a type 1 diabetic. He feels type 1's are "guilty by association" as it relates to type 2 diabetes. Because type 2 diabetes is very often lifestyle related, he feels type 1's often carry the same stigma. His wish was that type 2 diabetes be somehow other classified so as to put distance between the two forms of the disease.
As you may know, type 1 diabetics account for about 10 percent of the total diabetes population. It's my experience that type 1's are a breed apart in terms of the way they live their lives, as opposed to type 2's.
For example, many type 1 diabetics I've talked to are very concerned about their health (obviously), and work hard at maintaining control over their weight, overall fitness, and, most importantly, their blood glucose levels. They eat healthy foods, exercise often, and monitor their blood sugar regularly. Yet, according to this commenter, they remain stigmatized.
I'm not interested in igniting controversy over this issue, or in pitting type 1's against type 2's. Neither do I want to paint with a broad brush and suggest that all type 2's are lazy, and unconcerned about their health. I know many work hard at regaining lost health and in monitoring their blood sugar.
Yet, I wonder if tension already exists between type 1's and type 2's, and if others share this gentleman's concern. Perhaps I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. I also wonder if some of you feel the lines of distinction are already to widely drawn, and there shouldn't even be a delineation between the two types. After all, regardless of the type, both are still dealing with the same disease.
I'd really like to hear from you on this, from both sides of the aisle. Dialogue is a good thing. Please leave a comment.

1. I'm a type 1 diabetic and I have no personal animosity towards type 2s. However, I do get frustrated when I say I'm diabetic and then someone says "oh my grandfather has it and his doctor says he should loose weight." Then they look me up and down and conclude that I too need to go to Weight Watchers. It's annoying and I have to point out that I have type 1 diabetes and even if I were as skinny as a supermodel, I'd still have it.
I realize the people saying this are simply ignorant about diabetes and I try not to have bad feelings for type 2s, but I admit, it's difficult. Since type 1s are such a small section of diabetics I do feel we don't get our fair amount of press and no one seems to get the difference. As someone wrote above, if diet and exercise could jump start my pancreas, I'd live at the gym.
